Photopia Import a Luminaire

adminClicks Comment
If you do not have SolidWorks 2010 or later but would like to continue with the tutorial, skip down
to the section titled Get Started in Photopia and when you reach step 7, find the STL files included in
your installation located in the C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\LTI Optics\Photopia\Sample
Projects\2x4 Fluor Troffer STL folder (Windows 7 & 8) or C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents\LTI Optics\Photopia\Sample Projects\2x4 Fluor Troffer STL folder (Windows XP).
Export your CAD file from SolidWorks
To use a SolidWorks file in Photopia, it first needs to be exported as STL files. To export the luminaire
CAD file from SolidWorks:
1. In SolidWorks 2010 or later, open the 2x4 Fluor Troffer.SLDASM assembly file, located in the
C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\LTI Optics\Photopia\Sample Projects\2x4 Fluor Troffer SW
folder (Windows 7 & 8) or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\LTI
Optics\Photopia\Sample Projects\2x4 Fluor Troffer SW folder (Windows XP).
2. Select File > Save As and set the File Type to STL.
3. Select the Options button and use the following settings:
a. Make sure the Unit is set to Inches since that is what we will use in Photopia.
b. Set the Resolution to Fine. This will ensure that the resulting mesh is fine enough to
accurately represent the solid. In some cases you may want to use the Custom setting so
that you can create an even finer resolution.
